Summer Associate Program Intro Letter

Dear Candidate:

Thanks for your interest in the Taylor Porter Summer Associate Program.

In a typical year, we hire 12-16 summer associates — primarily second-year law students, but also a limited number of first-year students. More than anything, we strive to expose our summer associates to the real practice of law. Two attorney mentors help guide each associate throughout the program, with an emphasis on providing a diverse and varied experience. We encourage mentors to ensure that their associates spend several days outside the office and library during the session, attending closings, depositions, court hearings and trials. We also try, to the fullest extent possible, to involve summer associates in our cases, transactions and other work. This, we believe, is the best way to experience the distinctive Taylor Porter tradition and culture.

We also place great importance on our attorneys’ work-life balance — in other words, our summer program is not all work and no play. We schedule social activities throughout the term, including lunches with attorneys every Tuesday, a firm luncheon on Friday, and softball games every Wednesday afternoon. In the past, our firm outings have included trips to Evangeline Downs, Hymel’s for seafood and Retro Night at the Varsity. We do this because the summer program isn’t just about seeing each other as “attorneys” and “associates” — we want to know you, and you to know us, as people.

Sincerely,

John Allain Viator
