Taylor, Porter Attorney Hiko Miyagi, Other Attorneys Volunteer to Help Victims of Katrina
Still reeling from the lingering after-effects of Katrina, some 30 Asian Pacific American lawyer and law student volunteers from around the country, including Taylor, Porter attorney Hiko Miyagi, gathered in southern Louisiana from April 1 to April 3 for the Asian Pacific American Community Education and Legal Clinic for Hurricane Katrina Legal Aid.

Taylor, Porter Funds Scholarship at Southern University Law Center

Taylor Porter Partner, Major General Harry J. "Skip" Philips, Assumes New Command
The 377th Theater Support Command, a Belle Chasse-based Army Reserve unit that has had soldiers serving in Kuwait since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, could shift its combat support role to Europe under an Army proposal, the unit's new commanding general said last week.

Major General Harry J. "Skip" Phillips, Jr. to Command 377th Command
Taylor, Porter attorney and U. S. Army Reserve Major General Harry J. “Skip” Philips, Jr. has assumed command of the 377th Theater Sustainment Command based in Belle Chase, LA. In a command change ceremony on May 7, Philips took over as the unit’s commanding general and will lead the 500 Army Reserve combat service support units, totaling more than 40,000 troops for the next three years.

Debbie Lamb Receives "Volunteer Employee Spirit Award"
Debbie Lamb received the “Volunteer Employee Spirit Award” presented by Volunteer Baton Rouge for her community service. Debbie was nominated by Volunteers in Public Schools for her work in the program to teach children to read, which many Taylor Porter attorneys are also involved in. Kelley Corbari was nominated by Court Appointed Special Advocates which is a program where Kelley represents a child who has no one else to really look out for their interest with regard to foster care, adoption, school guidance, etc. Kelley was announced as one of four finalists for the award.

Changes to the "White Collar" Exemptions to the Fair Labor Standards Act
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently revised the "white-collar" exemptions to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) with the publication of new regulations defining the executive, administrative and professional exemptions under the federal wage-hour law. These new regulations are found at 29 CFR Part 541 and went into effect on August 23, 2004.

Tax-Free Exchanges: Don't Overlook This Opportunity to Save Taxes
Have you missed a potentially valuable tax savings opportunity? To find out, conduct a simple test. Look on the first page of your most recent income tax return. In the income section, look for the line for "other gain" or "net gain" from form 4797. A positive entry on that line indicates that your business may be one in which you can use a deferred like-kind exchange to reduce your taxes. However, the tax advantage of a deferred like-kind e x change does not occur automatically; you must plan to create the opportunity. Fortunately, the planning is not difficult, and what you must do has been clearly defined by the federal government.

After seven years of service as our comanaging partners, Shelby McKenzie and John Campbell retired from their positions in August, 2004.
