John F. McDermott’s primary areas of practice are taxation and business, individual and estate planning with attention to all federal, state and local tax issues including business and individual income tax, payroll tax, franchise tax, excise tax, ad valorem tax, sales and use tax and gift and estate tax. For the past 22 years, Mr. McDermott has represented both business and individual clients in matters of taxation, business and estate planning, successions and probate. Mr. McDermott represents individuals and businesses in controversy matters with the Internal Revenue Service, the Louisiana Department of Revenue and parish and municipal taxing authorities. He has represented clients in U.S. Tax Court, U.S. District Court, Louisiana state courts and the Board of Tax Appeals. In recent years Mr. McDermott has advised individuals and families on issues of elder care law including Medicare, Medicaid, long term care insurance, health care powers of attorney, special needs trusts and living wills.

Mr. McDermott has served as counsel for nonprofit organizations, including 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(6) organizations under the Internal Revenue Code and has obtained tax exempt and charitable status for such organizations.

Before returning to Baton Rouge to pursue the practice of tax law, Mr. McDermott practiced in the tax department of an international CPA firm for five years in New Orleans and Washington, D.C. Mr. McDermott is a Board Certified Tax Law Specialist, Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization, and he has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1984. Mr. McDermott served on the Examination Committee for the Tax Law Advisory Commission of the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization and is an assistant Bar Examiner for the Louisiana State Bar Association.

Mr. McDermott is member of the Baton Rouge and Louisiana State Bar Associations, National Lawyers Association, Baton Rouge Business and Estate Planning Council, The Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants, and The Planned Giving Council.

He was selected for inclusion in Louisiana Super Lawyers.
